The fourth round of the Canterbury Rugby Union's Senior Championship Competition was played on Saturday in splendid football weat_ter. 'VARSITY (3). Hasell kicked off for Merivale, who defended tho western end. The Blues started off 6martly, and soon had the opposition busily defending. From a scrum in a greasy portion of the ground, where play hovered for a long time, the ball came out to Atkinson, who badly beat the opposing five-eighths, and scored in a good position. Hasell converted. Merivale 5, 'Varsity nil. From tho kick out, McLcod mado a splendid opening, but bis con.reres seemed absolutely unwilling to take advantage of it, and a good chance was lost. Tho 'Varsity backs got going at length, but Mansell, with a clear field in front of him. missed an easy' chance of scoring. The students were pressing when half-time sounded. The students commenced the second spell with a strong forward attack, but # Williams removed to the centre by a good kick. Cade wa s pushed out at the_ corner when running strong'y. The Blue forwards continued to hold the upper hand, and M-*•**: well scored from a scramble near the line. Hasell easily converted. Merivale 10, 'Varsitr nil. Mansell and Williams were conspicuous for a good dribbling rush to the opposing twenty-five where Livingstone got the ball "away nicely from the line-out and passed to Simmers, who made a clever crosskick, and McLeod fielding the ball on the full, outpaced the opposition and scored near the corner. Ronavne failed with the kics. Merivale 10, 'Varsity 3. Time sounded shortly' after leaving Merivale the winners "by 10 points (two converted tries) to 3 points (an unconverted try). Mr W. Woods was referee.
