STRAWBERRIES IN TUBS.

A. reader of these notes asks how to j crow strawberries in tubs, this with tho plants set in holes around the outslQe of tho tub. * Tho principle is not a new one, Imfc has been follo.vod with tsome measure of success in many parts of tho world, though not for commercial purposes, as the results would jiot ixs profitable, ow- j itif to the cost of the tubs and the limited number which could be attended to With a barrel of some size, say with a capacity of 30 to 40 gallons, some three tiers of holes are pierced, these n\)uui three to four inches in diameter, and six holes in a tier. As the barrel is filled with the loam tho plants are .-«jt in the holes; this in a way so as to permit all the roots to be well spread, and not packed in a bunch. The soil must not be wet and sticky when the planting is being done, out freo and dry. The top of the barrel should also be planted. This will give a complete appearance to the barrel when the plants are covered with flower and fruit. All watering should bo don© overhead, that is, from the top of the barrel, and allow the moisture to poak down. Tho bc&t time to pTant the tub or barrel, m in August. The first season may not give much in the way of crop, but the succeeding year tho results should be good. The English way is to plant on the top of the barrel, but the Americans do not eet plants there, instead they insert a drain-pipe through tho soil, and pour the water down through it. This is a good plan for watering, but need not necessarily

preclude the planting of strawberries around the top of the barrel. As a matter of fact, it would be an advantage both ways.
