NOTES.

Ay Press Assciation message from Wanganui states that P.ostiflion has been scratched for all remainingengagements at the Wanganui J.C'6 Winter Meeting.

2>r. King recently operated on Black Northern! and removed a substance from his back, which is said to explain the peculiarity possessed by the Salvadan gelding of stopping iv his races (says an exchange). .

After the race lor The Shorts at Oamaru yesterday, J. Campbell, rider of Traditor, and C Wasley, rider of Grand Cup, were, called . before the stewards and cautioned for cutting across at the start. After the first day's racing at Oamaru Mr R. IJaxtor sold the hurdler Cardiff to the Otago owner who races under the name or "Mr J. Flaneur. 3, Cardiff made his first appearance in his new owner's colours in tho Pacific

Hurdles yesterday, but was not prominent at any stage of tho race. John Barleycorn started twice on each day of tho North Qtago Jockey Club's Winter Meeting, and in each of bis races ran well. On tho first day he finished fourth in the Laudon Handicap and second in tho Stewards' Handicap, and on tho second day he ran fifth in tho Grange Handicap and third in the Meirbers' Handicap. Solution's son, Don Solvo, was a hoi favourite for tho Two-Year-Old Handicap decided at Randwick on May 9th. and, carrying Sst 41b, ho scored by thrc<M]uaiters of a length. I>uring th 3 same afternoon E. Lovrp rode Midnight Sun, who was one of tho last two to finish in the Winter Stakes. Backers did not have a. particularly <jood time at the North Otago Jockey Club's Winter Meeting, a.s not one first favourite was successful in a handicap raco either day. The only first favourites to score were Vanna and Charlotte, who won the special weight events, the Trial Plate and The Shorts respectively. Afton Loch, the winner of the Electric Handicap at Oamaru yesterday, is inclined to give trouble at tho barriev, but sho ha 3 more than once gob a break at the start through being on the move at the rise of the tapes. This was the caso yesterday, when she was walking up just as the barrier lifted, and at once getting into her stride was never headed.

Tatterley and Kohinoor are ongaged in the Stradbrooke Handicap, of 700 soys, trix furlongs, to be decided at Brisbane on tho 30th of this month. Midnight San and Moonhria are in the Brisbane Cup, to be run on June 3rd, and also in tho Moretoa Handicap, which will be run ou June 6th. Riey are to go to Brisbane in charge of J. .Whitworth. The Jockey Club's Winter Meeting will be brought to a conclusion to-day, and the acceptances received for the various events suggest interesting racing, in the Grandstand Steeplechase a good field is engaged, a t good contest should result, while thoso engaged in tho Empiro

Handicap represent good class, and* tbo if suit should be interesting. Tbo form shown by Salataiol at Ashburton gave promise of an early win over hurdles, and that promise was redeemed yesterday at Oamaru, the Coronet gelding won the Facihc Hurdles very easily. Salathiel was id front before tho field had gone half a mile, and at the finish he had a good deal to spare. The consistent Margo ran a good race in second place, but her weight of list 61b was too much for her in tho heavy going. . Southlandoxs had another good innings at Oamani yesterday, for Prettjy Jane and Golden King, both owned by a Southland sportsman who races £5 "Mr Y. J. Morelle," and trained by P. T. Hogan. won tho Gransjo Handicap and Tβ Puke Woltcr Handicap respoetivelv. while Peter, with whom A. D. Mclvor had won the last race on tho first day, repeated his performance oy winning the Members* Handicap yesterday. Peter won his second race in. just tho same fashion as he did his first, leadinK from end to end. , Troon finished very strongly .Jβ the Victoria Handicap at Oamaru yesterday, and the merit of her victory was <-onsiderably enhanced by the fact that she was bumped beforo tho field turned into the straight, and with heads turned for homo was very nearly last. At the distance The Cornet seemed a very likely winner, but Troon came very tast on the outside and beat him home by three-parts of a length. Glenfinnan lost a cood deal of ground at tho start nnd did well to finish third with Sst lalb in such heavy Koing. Both Wairaki and Teviotdale also sot away badly, bat were rushed to tho tront in «- great hurry, and wore, m consequence, stopping at the finish.
