St.''Patrick's Club held a social last evening, when the attends uco was as large as the inclemency of tho weather would allow. Supper was dispensed by the ladies, and Messrs Nostcr (piano), aud Jacobs (violin) provided the music. slr R. Sullivan was IVI.C.
At this week's meeting of St. Augustine's Young Men's Society, a. dfebate on tho comparative values of iron and gold in the world's commerce was held. Mr L. Wills supported iron, and 31r C. Honey gold. Mr Thos. Russell acted as judge, aud awarded 44 points for gold, and 41 for iron.
A heavy coating of snow is on the Waimate hills. The rain gauge at 8 a.m. yesterday registered 29 points, to which should bo added 12 points from Thursday morning. No snow on tho Waimato hills till tbe third week of May is. generally regarded as tho sign of a fairly mild winter.
A special meeting of tho Sohool Committeo has been called for Monday night, to consider the High School Board's offer to purchase the land detirwl for nlay ground extension.
