FALL OF SNOW ALL OVER CANTERBURY.
BITTERLY COLD WIND AND
HEAVY RAIN
Tho strong sou-wester which blew on Wednesday night rapidly increased in force after midnight, and tho rain camo down in torrents.
Shortly after two o'clock yesterday morning there were squalls of hail, sleot and suow, which foil so thickly that at daybreak there wero patches of hail and snow over an inch deep in different parts of the city.
A strong south-wet-1 gale was blowing in the city yesterday, and the weather was exceedingly cold and wintry. Heavy showers of rain, mingled with sleet, fell at frequent intervals, and there was a thick coating of s:iow mi tho Port Hills for the first timo this season. The weather showed little signs <■: improving until a late hour last night. After sunset thero wore frequent heavy squalls of rain, hail and sleet vith-oc-casional flakes of snow. The night w»* very cold and ia many places the hail and sleet- lay thickly upon the ground. With a rising barometer there were indications that the weather would clear up towards morning.
