TAYLOR'S MISTAKE.
to inr. eoitob. q? "tot. ritE«." Sir,-rOn Jahmiry, 24th a correspond dent of "The Press," "J.A.5.." -aßkcd for information as to Taylor's Mistake, and whether a wreck or mishap to tha captain of a ship had occurred to establish a placo name. I replied that through Captain Taylor, of th.-> United States ship who in 1863'-gave evidence to a commission on Lyttelton harbour improvemuts, tho name ' had arisen. To-day I find from . sailing directions printed; for Lyttelton' An 1853, eleven years*'before Captain Taylor, of the Vol~3. gave his evidence, the first bay to tho N.W. of Godley Head was known as Vincent's Bay. or Taylor's Mistake, so called "because ■sometimes mistaken for Sumner, which is the "next bay to tho west." Therefore it is still opon for anyono to shod further light on Taylor's Mistake— Yours, etc., ' J.L.W.
