UNPLEASANT WEATHER CONDITIONS
- The Christchurch Shec? ScS Trial Clua commenced their eighteenth gnnuai trials at tho usual grounds, Caefcmero Bills, yestcr»day. The weather waa very bvistorous, aid the eon-west pale during the sight had giro tho hills a slight celling o: snow, cud the vrind had blown down tho caterers' largo marquee. Tbc-re were hail squalls during tha day, and tho conditions generally wero very *ry"ss;, hut tho wcrk had to bo gone on with. The attendance -was limiUd alraost to competitors aad officials of the olab. Mr *""*"• O. Rutherford, of Montrose, again acted as and the other e-fficiate were: —Timekeepers, Messrs Greo. Murray-Ayne'.oy, S. M. D. Hortea. asd Captaia McUa.n; £»5 stewards, Messrs J, Evans aad D. McLaughlin, and the lotting out of tho sheep was in tfc-a hscis of Messrs A- H- Jermiaja and G. McLaughlin. The sheep were a. strong lot of merino wether?, bred on Cl&verJcy Statiac, Kaikoura, and were, kisdi? tent *cr tbo, occasion by Mr J- GUJanderi, o: Wadciugton, tbo scarcity of marines making it difficult to secura sheep for the trials. The work done by tho dogs was not very sat factory, the majority of iboro failirg to bring thuir cheep down og tha hill, and only three dogs completed tho full course and penned tnoir abecp, several others failing to yard. , Tho trials will be continued tcoUy, aad ;«i the evening tbo annual .social to competitors will be bold in the Zetland Hot*!. The Hetdinrj, Bringing Back, Holding in the Ring, and Yarding Oairs was first commenced. The first dog to sua was J Morgan's Jot, wnicb west out won iv Sinin Tsec, and did sood work in getting tho sb*ep clear o! some rocks. The dog-was a-bit unfortunate in bringing back the. rest cf tho "-ay, and split and lest tho sheep beforo getting on ta- the ilat. T. Shcr-dar.'e Tib weut out fas', a llttis 20sec,._ws9 * bit inclined to rush the sheep, ar.d ait»r cleverly negotiating tho rocks, ho"split Una sheep.'but recovered them again. Tho »heep v.-ere" then brought bark ia a good line to th© ditch, the do; rusniws -rid* at the turnip. Ono of tho sheep stopped in the ar.d lost its ntaiee, and.the mn had to be abandoned. J- B. Kobicson'o Chiel kept a gocd line in going out, and headed in Imin Slsce. Ue tu«n rushed the sheep, aad divided them, but tbey came together again. Tho dog barked a gocd deal, but did sot work tho aheop woll. cad osoe ran right round them. Watora's Scott went out fast, but wide, but when he' got above the sheep he was some little time in sighting them, and did cot head till 3min 2Ucc had elapsed, lie ooon afterwards split and lost his shoop. B. U\ Trotter's Storm vent ottfc slowly and headed is Srnin rXsec. Ths sheep were worked very quietly down hUI and brought into the ricff in 9rain SOsec, where they wore nicely held. At the y*ro tbe dog ran about wide and never get tha sheep into position for penning, and time was oatled. J. 13. V. Chapman junior's Tip missed the aheep in going out, and had to cross in heading them. tb» sheep havin<* bolted to the left <m tie dog approaching them. He headed them in emm aisec. The cheep were brought hack steadi'y on a long but clear course above the racss, and tha ring was not reached before time waa called.
