In his younger days Mr Burnes was a successful athlete, and was well known >n Dunodin and Christcburch, as well as in this city. Ho was the son of Mr Adam Burnes, who in 1557 opened the Oriental Banking Corporation in Wellington (the first bank established in the colony), and who was afterwards the first general manager and inspector <>t the National Bank of New Zealand. Mr J. H. N. A. Bnrnes was bora in Melbourne, and had been in the service of the New Zealand Shipping Company for thirty-six years. He was fifty three years of age. He joined the Wellington office as a youth, and was ufterwards stationed for several years at Dunedin. Hβ then became chief clerk in the company's head office at Christchurch. and some sixteen years ago was promoted to tho position of manager in Wellington, Three years ago he took a trip to England, but after his return he spent sis months in a private hospital. Hβ had been ill ever since, and his death was not unexpected, as tho result of heart trouble. Tho late Mr Burnes Lj survived by his widow and a son and daughter. Miss Madge Burnes is on a visit to England, and the son, Mr Allan Burnes, who is on a ehcep station in the North Island, is spending a holiday in New South Wales. His sister is Mrs H. H. Loughnan, of Christchurch, and his brothers are Messrs Adam Burnes (Gox'ernment Life Insurance Department, Wellington), Alexander P. Burnes (Government Life Insurance Department, Nelson), Ernest L. Burnes (Melbourne, and formerly of the A.M.P. Society, Wellington), George Burnes (district manager of the A.M.P. Society, Inver cargilT), and Douglas Burnes (who is residing in Canada). j

Tho burial took place- at Mangatainoka Cemetery on Friday aiteruoon last of the Rev. Mother Brigid Desmond, of. St. Brigidino Convent. Pahiatua. The deceased lady, who had been practically an invalid for the past cix years, was born at Bandon, County Cork, 53 years ago. She entered into religious work at tho age of 21 at the Brigidine Convent at MountrathlKJueen's County, Ireland, spending threo years in the novitiate. "In .1866; sho came to Australia and spent two years in Coonia (N.S.W.), before coining, to New Zealand, where sho was associated with the foundation of the Order established by the Very Rev. Dean McKenna, V.G., in Masterton. in 1898. Tho late RevMother s:>ent seven years in Masterton, and went to Pahiatua with the establishment of the Convent there in 190G, holding tho office of. superior for seven years. Three years ago the late Rev. Mother celebrated her silver jubilee.

Tho death of-Mr Pa trek Grieve Ho\rden, a resident of Wellington for over thirty years, occurred at Vogeltown on Sunday after a brief illness. He was a native of Edinburgh, and γ-iis 73 years of age. After finishing his education he entered -tho sorvaco of tho Cunard Steamship Company,- followed the seA for some years; _He then settled in the Argentine, leaving South America thirty-six years ago to come to New Zealand. He* "was with tho Union Ship Company for four years, and then took up his residence in Wellington, where he joined , hiV brother, Mr D. B. Hdwdrn. as proprietors, of the We'Ungfon B'scuit Comnany. Tho late Mc Howden yvps tho first chairman of the Vos?oltown School Committee. .Ho has loft a .widow and a fami'y of one son (now at sea) and six daughters.
