A. REPLY TO SIR JOSEPH WARD.

WELLINGTON, May 20. fllr Massey to-day refuted Sir Joseph Ward's criticism of the Government's statement that 'when they came into office tho Treasury chest was largely deploted. Mr Massey pointed out that thero. wero such instances as the following:—ln tho case of the local authorities thero wero Ht 70,000 of commitments and only £17,000 to moot them. So with the reserve fund eecurities; £775,000 had beon borrowed against those securities, which only amounted to £800,000. Tho amount of. money which might be lent to any settler was cut down by the provious Government to ,£SOO. "These," Mr Massey added; "are all indications of tho state of the Treasury when wo came into office, and it is quite useless for Sir Joseph Ward or anyone elso to quibhlo, for these facts speak for themselves and cannot bo refuted."
