TRAMWAY UNION'S SOCIAL.
PRESENTATION TO OLD MEMBERS
The first social gathering held undor the auspices of the Christchurch Tramway Employees' Union took place last night in the Alexandra Hall, and was largely attended. Dancing was indulged in till an early hour,to music supplied by Mr C.-Wells's orchestra. The Masters of Ceremonies were Messrs R McFarlane and F. Perrers. The catering was done by Mr and Mrs A. Westwood.
At a convenient interval the president of the Union (Mr J. Nind) made Eresentations to two ex-raembors of the nion. The first was to Mr George Lomas, for several years president of the Union, who recently left the Tramway Board's .service to £o into other employment. In presenting Mr Lomas with a gold albert and gold medallion (which bore a suitable inscription), Mr Nind referred to the fact that Mr Lomas had been connected with the tramway service since the inception of electric traction, and had done excellent and hard work as president of the Union. The presentation had . been subscribed to by all the Board's employees in addition to members of the Union. Mr Lomas, in acknowledging the gift, said that it had been with considerable regret that he left the tramway service. Although the work in connexion with the Union had been hard, he had been ably assisted by the executive. j
Mr Nind then presented a of sovereigns, subscribed by members and non-members of the Union, to Mr James Carpenter, who, on account of ill-health, has left the Board's service. Mr Nind paid a high tribute to Mr Carpenter as a worker. Mr Carpenter briefly and feelingly acknowledged the presentation.
