MINING.
THE ' WAIHI FIELD. ENGLISH CAPITAL INTERESTED. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WAIHI, May 19. An application made at tho Wardens' Court to-day, on behalf of James Blackman, mining engineer, and several English investors, is of unusual importance to the Waihi field. The application in question was ior protection for two of tho five claims in the old Romulus group.
,The declaration which accompanied the request showed that Mr C. Rooko Williams, of London, had some months ago entered into negotiations with a powerful financial syndicate who expected to be able to commence active operations on the group of claims early this year. These negotiations, however, were interrupted owing to the syndicate's large interests in Mexican ventures becoming involved by the serious trouble which has since invested that country. ' The withdrawal of certain capital to be used in exploiting the Waihi properties wae, under the altered conditions in Mexico, rendered impracticable. This was an unlooked-for setback, and much valuable time wae lost. Ultimately Mr Williams was successful with another &trou2 EngMsh syndicate, who confidently anticipate the-immediate raising of-i capital of £16,030 to carry out preliminary development work. With this capital they hopo to provide sufficient proof of the value of the properties to warrant them in pro-ctod-ng with tlie flotation of a larger company. The first''work decided upon is to put down a vertical bore of 2COO feet. With this object an application is being forwarded , to tho il.nes' Department for tho use of the Government diamond drill.
