LAND SETTLEMENT.
AN EXCELLENT RECORD
(SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.")
WELLINGTON, May 19.
In: his speech, at Napier last night, Sjr Joseph Ward made some criticism of the Reform Party's , pnrchase of only 52,000' acres of land during their first year of office, adding that ''the.Liberal Party had been, negotiating fortho purchase of this land before Mr Massey came into power, but the Prime Minister took ail the credit for it."
Mr iiassey is easily able to controvert Sir Joseph. Ward's * argument, in tho year referred to. by bir Joseph Ward, tho Government, ho points.out, were only in otlico. lor nine months, and yet they had 52,000 acres to their credit, but in tho following year they_ managed to comploto the purchase, of Bo ie»ver than 142,062 acres of land of the value of £oW),/08. Contrast this, said Mr Massey, with Sir Joseph Ward's own record. In the year 1910----11 he had purchased only 14,3yy acres, and in the year 1911-12 only -14,44/ acres.
Tho figures aro, of course, greatly in favour of the Reform Government.
