ENDS IN DEATH BY
DROWNING.
EXCITING SCENE ON A STEAMER

MELBOURNE, May IS. Two prisoners named Maroney and Downey, who escaped from Launcestou Gaol in March, were re-arrested at Albany.
Whiles returning in the steamer Indarra in charge of two constables, and when the boat was entering tho bay, Downey ocmplained oi illness, and left tho cabin in charge of a constable, Maroney and tso other constable remaining.
Tho door was doted, but not locked, and Maroney dashed out. The constable awoke, and chased him round the decks, but tho fugitive snatched a lifebelt and jumped overboard. In the meantime Downey made a desperate attempt to escape, but was overpowered and handcuffed.
The steamer was stopped, and tho sea in the vicinity unavailingly searched. The jump was made four miles from land, and it is believed that Maroney was drowned.
