Mr R. C. Bishop, secretary of the Christchurch Gas Company, who recently underwent a serious operation, is reported to bo progressing well towards recovery. The Rev. T. A., Williams', whose ap- § ointment as. organiser for the National chools' Defence League was announced recently, has resigned the chargo of the Sydenham Baptist Church in order to devote himself to the duties of organiser for tho League.
Mr John Strauchon, .who has just retired from the position of Uajder-Secre-tary for Lands, was entertained at dinner at Wellington last evening by his colleagues in the Lands Department. Tho Prime Minister was present, and, on behalf of the officers, made a presentation to Mr Strauohon of several pieces of plate and other mementoes of his association with them.
In connexion with tho Competitions, advantage was taken of the final demonstrat on concert on Saturday night to make some piesentations to those responsible for the conduct of the contests. Mr G. W. Jenncr, the capablo and energetic secretary of the Society, was presented by Mr F. Macdonaid, on behalf of tho competitors, with a silver-mounted shaving set. Tn making the presentation. Mr Macdonald referred to tho uniform and unfailing kindness and courtesy that the competitors received from Mr .Tenner. A presentation Was also made to Mr J. Sweney, who acted as steward throughout the C6mpetit : ons.. On«nohalf of the competitors, Miss Alice Saunders handed Mr Sweney a case of pipes, and referred to tho efficient ana capable manner in which he had discharged his important duties. Both gentlemen suitably acknowledged the gifts.
