GENERAL HAMILTON IN HAWKE'S BAY.
(PRESS J-SSOCTATTOV twlegeam.. HASTINGS, May 16General Sir lan Hamilton received a very hearty public welcome on arrival here this afternoon. A large crowd of citizens assembled outside tbe Council Chambers, where tho Mayor (Mr W. Hart) j-resonted him with an illuminated address expressive of admiration of his valuable senices to the Empire j in actual warfare, in administration, j and in literature. The address con- , eluded with these words:—"That your : visit will be beneficial and instructive we have no fear. There may bo minor differences of opinion on the far-reach-ing question of defence, nevertheless, wo hope you will appreciate and believe that we in Maoriland havo the spirit of our fathers, and though far removed from our base, will live for, and fight for, this Antipodean "outpost, and the upholding of our best historical traditions."' uieneral Hamilton briefly replied. Cadets were present from Dannevirke, Takapati, Waipukurau, Waipawa. Hastings, Napier, Wairoa and Gisborne. T_e total" rank and file on parade was 1300. General Hamilton.a-so inspected some fifty veterans and South African contingenters. The General was the guest of Colonel A. H. Russell. He leaves Hastings for Palmerston North by the expre__> on Monday morning.
