For some days past a strong southerly gale has been blowing along the coast-. ami south-bound steamers havo been experiencing dirty weather. The ferry steamer Maori, which left "Wellington at 11 p.m. ou Saturday, was steaming against a moderate gale and heavy head seas until after passing Kaikoura. She arrived at Lyttelton about midday yesterday.

In Christchurch tho weather was cold and squally on .Saturday, with frequent heavy showers. Yesterday morning thero was an improvement in the eonditionsj and the day was fine, but cold and cloudy. There were indications of a frost late last night.
