BRIEF NOTICES.

Tho Art Annual for 1913 is devoted to "The Art of E. Blair Leighton." There are no fewer than 50 illustrations, exquisitely done, six of them in colour, and a well-written and appreciative account -of the artist and his works is contributed by Mr Alfred Yockney. Mr Blair Leighton, it appears claims no direct relationship with the President of the Royal Academy. His father, Charles Blair •Leighton, was an artist of the highest promise who died at the age of '32 in 1855. Mr Edward Blair Leighton up to i the ago of 21 was in a business house in the City of London and thon broke adrift, and with savings not amounting to a hundred pounds ho devoted himself to the study of art. He is now one of the most successful of English painters of the romantic school, and the charming examples of his work given in this f-annual" will carry pleasure into many a home. (London: Virtue and Co., City Garden Row, City road, 2s 6d"net.) The Buchanan Portfolio of Characters from Dickens, issued by the wellknown Glasgow firm of distillers contains , somo finely executed reproductions in colour of paintings by Frank Reynolds. . The January "Pall Mall" has several interesting articles, the best, perhaps, being the description of the magnificent and awe-inspiring ruins of Angkor, m Cambodia. The fine illustrations heighten the interest of tho article. •Mr T; P. O'Connor writes about Lord Hugh Cecil, and Mr 8. L. Bensusan discusses "Sportsmen in Account with the Land." Mr Boyle Lawrence's article on the v\ays of the day is, as usual, very readable. Several wellknown people contribute fiction. The illustrations are acain a feature of the magazine, this time they seem better than ever.
