JOTTINGS.
Dr. R. Dykes Shaw, of Hope Park United Free Church. Edinburgh, has been elected secretary of tho General Piesbyterian Alliance. The appointment,* it will bo remembered, was rendered necessary through the death of tho late secretary, Dr. Mathews, of London, who was a prominent figure during the last meetings of the Alliance of Aberdeen, in the course of the summer. Dr. Shaw, who was closely associated with his predecessor in the sectarial work, ministered in Hamilton for 12 years before going to Edinburgh. Tho Rev. E. W. T. Greenshield, who has just returned to England after an absence of two years, during which he has been working for the Church Missionary Society at the lonely Missionstation at Blacklead Island, Baffin's Land, describes the work among tho Eskimos as being full of encouragement. He speaks of tho sincerity of tho Eskimo teachers, their effective work, their readiness and courage in making toilsome journeys in order to proach, and also of tho purer social lifo of the peoDle, in which he is ,confirmed by traders and sailors alike. The Scriptures are read eagerly, and furs of some value are often given in exchange for a New Testament. Tho difficulties that havo to be faced by tho missionary can bo judged from the fact that only the unexpected arrival of a whaler saved Mr Greenshield from the prospect of another winter on the island, with stores nearly exhausted, in company with tbe shipwrecked crew of the vessel in which he was to have sailed for Engiland.
