LEESTON. Somo months ago the Leeston Bowling Club entered into an arrangement to purchase an acre section of land with a frontage on High street on which to lay oat a bowling green, tennis courts, and croquet lawns with the idea of forming a combined bowling, tennis, and croquet club. Up to the present the Club has been relying upon private ontemriso to provide a bowline green,

and the Club has merely taken tho responsibility of keeping the green in order. It has been felt for a long timo that the Club, which is a f.iirly live institution, ought to havo a ground of its own. and it is this feeling that has led to the purchase of ihe property above mentioned. The question of finance, of course was a big hurdle for the Club to get over, but so far everything is going along quite satisfactorily. Tho price paid for the land was £I*oo and the purchase was effected by tho aid of debentures of £5 each, in which way a very considerable sum was raised. Tho section has been fenced, drainage works have been carried out. a well has been sunk, and two first-class tennis courts havo been laid in asphalt, and preparations have boon mado for layiing down tho bowling green and croquet lawns in due course. All this work has necessitated a fairly heavy expenditure, and the newly constituted controlling body, the Leeston Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club, finds that- it is running .short of funds. The Club's somewhat ambitious programmo provides for the erection of an up-to-date pavilion, and in order to do this and to effect other improvements more money must be obtained. The question of finance was recently considered by the Club, and it was decided to invite tbe assistance of the ladies of the district in running a bazaar. This is to be held <vn tho 1 stand 2nd of April, and the ladies are now making preparations for the event. At present wire netting is bring placed round the tennis court*, and it is expected that they will be fit to piny upon in about a fori night's time. Leeston can boast a good few tenni,« players, and a successful career is prophesied for tho new Club.
