Emperador and Canute have gone to Hawera to compote at the meeting next week Acceptances for tho Egmont R.C.s Summer Meeting and tho Taranaki Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting close this evening. M. Hobbs is having his two-year-old half-sister to Peg ridden, and she is taking to her work very kindly.. This filly is by Martian —Cora Lynn, and is a very well-grown, racy-looking youngeter. Moddite, the newcomer to "VT. McDonald's stable at Riccarton, is a good sort to look at, with plenty of size, big enough for any branch' of racing. He is of a colour not often seen —a chocolate brown. Tho ashes of Chokeboro Lodge are fast being removed, and it will not be long beforo all traces of the fire will have disappeared. New, up-to-date stables, on "plans not yet decided on, will be erected as speedily as possible. C. Gfiesler has an addition to his team in a two-year-old filly belonging to the Ashburton snortsman Mr J. C. N. Grigg. She is a* full sister to Zeus, who won the Kaitoko Handicap at Trentham last Saturday, being by Martian from Stephanie. The two-year-old filly Bonny Maiden", by Bonny Glen—Greek Maid, who has been going in a most promising way, gavo herself a rick the other day, arid it does not" look as if she will be a starter at the coming C.J.C. Meeting. Another of T. Sheenan's charges in Ada Merling injured her off fore fetlock very seriously yesterday morning, and it is very doubtful if she will ever race again. Ada Merling is by Martian— Leonore, and her owner was offered a good price for her last Cup Meeting, but declined to sell, as the filly was showing signs of being something moro than useful.;.'.... 'V ' '"' ""- - Perhaps.-there is no subject except religion in which so much crank prejudice can enter as that of horse breeding (says the Sydney "Mail"). The reputation of any line "may bo torn to shreds by its detractors for the failure of one horse, while another may bo boosted sky high upon the success of a single individual. Time has proved that the charge of "hysteria/" levelled at tho St. Simons was as foolish as it was undeserved, and time is beginning to prove quite as effectually tnac the charge of delicacy against the house of Xewminster is equally groundless. It became a tradition that Newminster was delicate, as undoubtedly several of his stock were; but we have had delicate Stockwells, delicate St. Simons, and delicate everything else. It does not, of course, follow that bocause certain sons of Newminster were delicate all his progeny were built the same way. As a matter of fact, Newminster has become almost as strong a factor in successful sires and brood mares as Galopin is to-day. Where we would have been without Newminster's two greatest sons, Lord Clifden and Hermit, is a poser few peoplo would care to tackle. This pair have become real stud book stays, particularly in mares, and I think their success sufficiently answers the" charge of delicacy. Why should descendants of Newminster bo delicate? He was by the stoutest stallion in England, Touchstone, and was out of Beeswing, the greatest stayer in England, who was not run off her legs early in life, and was well treated during her long years on the turf. Newminster himself was n Tacehorso of the highest *olas«, and his blood has come out with wonderful success from the first season of his 6tock up to the present day.
