THE TOWN HALL SITE.
-»„. ■ ■ . TO TITE EDITOR OF "THE PBESS." Sir, —Your correspondent "Ratepayer," in your issue of yesterday, is in favour of the citizens of'Christchurch purchasing the brick terrace fronting y'ictoria square, for the reason tnac it is not beautiful, and using the ground for tlie site ot the new Town Hail. These houses are evidently sought after by tenants, as they seem always to be iet, and if the citizens are to purchase property because it is not beautiful, they certainly will have a big contract on. Does your correspondent think that people will be in favour of purchasing this property at a big price, which they certainly would have to do, when they have one of the best Bites in the city available without purchase? As to canvassing the rich men, most of whom own little or no city property, for money to buy this site, the chance of getting much money that way is too remote to think about. "What the city requires is to build its Town Hall, which should be second to none in the Dominion, on the best-site, the property of the Council, available in the city, but there is no chance of the citizens carrying a vote for a Town HaU until they know the cost to the city of the Lake Coleridge scheme. One thing at a time seems to be the idea of the people, and a very good idea it is.—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER No. 2. January 29th*>
