The Ashburton Amateur Swimmfcig Club held its fifth Annual Carnival in the Domain Baths yeatorday afternoon, when tho weather waa ideal from a swimmer's point of', view. ! The attendance was- a record, being swelled |no doubt by thd Timaru visitors, who wero holding a picnic in the Domain. The, entries constituted a record for; the Club, and numbered 174, us against 89 for the previous year. In addition to the ordinary events, tbe 50yds Provincial Handicap of Canterbury was decided, and attracted seven entries, the winner being C. Atkinson, of Ea3t Christchurch. H. V. Jerred, of Opawa, came second, but was disqualified for crossing and the second place waa awarded to W. E. Cookson, also belonging to tbo East Christchurch Club. During the afternoon, Miss E. Eadc, of the East Christchurch Club, with Miss G. Piper, of tho same club, as a subject, gave an exhibition of practical lifesaving under Mies Teape. Results: — 30 Yards Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club Handicap (prises £1 ls and 10s Gd) — First heat: J. Harris (scr) 1, XV. Clark. (Ssec) 2. Seven started. Won by a touch. Second heat: W. Stoddart (Ssec) 1, L. Christie (2Jsec) 2. Six started. Won by a yard. Third heat: H. Hyland (ljsec) 1, O. Argyle (2£sec) 2. Five started. Won by a yard. Fourth heat; G. E. Sarney (ssec) 1, W; Tcrris (2sec) 2. Five started. Woq by threequarters of a yard. Final: Hyland 1, Stoddart 2. Hyland won nicely by a oouplo of yards after a fast swim.
