STOCK FROM THE WEST COAST.
AN INTERESTING EXPERIMENT. (SPECIAL TO "THE rRESS.") GREYMOUTH, January 28. By the express train on Thursday a first consignment of 500 fat lambs from the Grey Valley will ho forwnrded for disposal at Addington on Wednesday next. The values ruling at Addington for fat lambs for export to London, together with the surplus stock in this district, have, made room for tho onte.rpri.se. The consignment is being forwarded by Messrs Mark Sprot and Co. The iambs were, purchased from clients in tho Grey Vai-
ley. and if they stand the jouinev, more particularly from Otira to Halpin Creek, whence they will be railed to Addington, they are expected to compare favourably with "prime Canterbury." Particular care has been taken to send only lambs weighing 40lbs and over, in order to allow- for loss in travelling. Mr James Duncan, the "old time-" dealer between Canterbury and the* West Coast, is associated in the export, and .will car© for tho flock between Otira and Halpin Creek, thence to Addington. Considerable interest is taken in tho experiment. Mr J. D. Lynch says ho is convinced that in the near future th© Wcstland province will bo able to export largely to Canterbury, when better facilities are available. Tho export of lambs must necessarily be limited, but tho exjwrt of fat cattle, particularly during the late winter and early spring, enonld. before lons, bo of material benefit to tho cattleraiser in Wostland and the consumer in Canterbury.
