GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS.
(BY OCT. COMMERCIAL EDITOR.) Wednesday Evening. Business in new grain is still almost entirely confined to oats, and several sales of Algerians, I>uns and Gartons havo been made, though tho quantity on offer is not very large at present. Very little threshing out of stook is being done, partly on account of the* low price of oats, and partly because the sappy nature of the heavy straw •will necessitate stacking. Most of the business in Algerians has been done at Is 6d at country stations, and Ihins have been sold as low as Is sd, while Is 7tl has been paid for A grade Gartons. No sales of wheat are yet reported, and the only sales of barley said to have taken place are a large line of prime malting at 3s 6d at a country station, and a lino of thinner ouaJitv at 3s Cd f.o.b. No further forward sales of potatoes havo taken place in consequence of the belief that the crop will be considerably reduced by the blight that has affected the crops in tho South. A Christchurch merchant who has visited the Oainaru district confirms the reports as to the damage done by blight to the crop in that district. The blight having manifested itself as early as December is anticipated to cause moro loss than if it had oome later. The undermentioned are the prices to farmers at country stations, free of commission, sacks extra, except where otherwise stated:— Old Wheat—Nominal. Tuscan 3s 8d to 3s 10d. Hunters 3s lid, Pearl 4s.
