MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Beforo Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) THEFT. Sydney Scott appeared on remand, on two charges of theft of bicycles. He had already becu sentenced to throe months' imprisonment on a. similar charge committed within a few days of the other two offences. A plea of guilty was entered. . SuD-Insriector McKinnon said the accused had applied" at a certain house for board and lodging, and had obtained the loan of tho landlord's bicycle, while ho. went and collected certain references from his employer to satisfy tho landlord that his board would be duly paid. Accused had then sold the bicyclo to a second-hand dealer. Tho oth.r offence was a similar one. In answer to a questi.n, accused said ho came out to rfew Zealand. as an able seaman; he was an assisted emigrant. Accused: I'll go straight if your Worship will give mo a chance. The Magistrate: But .you've already done three months, and it's a bit lato to give you a chance. Accused was sentenced to two months' imprisonment on each charge, sentences to be concurrent, and to take effect on expiration of present sentence. VAGRANCY. John Crowther, a coloured man, appeared oh a charge that he was an idle and disorderly person, in that he had insufficient lawful means of support. He pleaded net guilty. Detective Gibson said the accused came to Christchurch with a criminal named Golding, and had since done no work. _ -■"*' Chief-Detective Bishop, in evidence, said that the accused had recently been charged with theft and vagrancy, and had got off on the former charge. To: give him a chance, tho other, charge had been withdrawn. Constable Bickerdyke deposed that the accused loafed about hotels, and was the constant companion of thieves and prostitutes. Tho Magistrate: Three months' imprisonment with hard labour. Accused was further charged that on November loth. 1913, he did steal the sum of 6s 6d, the "property of the Now Plymouth Waterside Workers' Union. On this charge a remand until Thursday nest was granted. * REMANDED. William McClelland ttlr Weston) Was remanded until Saturday on a charge of theft of a horse, valued at £5. LYTTELTON. (Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) ■ BROKEN ORDERS. John Norton pleaded guiltj to a charge of procuring liquor during tho currency oP a prohibition order, and was fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. On a similar charge, John Orton Gebbie was fined 10s, with tho alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment. -
