Tho strikers claimed unemployment benefit under the Insurance Act, on the ground that they were dismissed after due notice. The authorities refused to recognise the claim because of the existence of a trade dispute. It is estimated that thirty-one thousand men are idle in the building trades, and thirteen thousand coal porters and carmen. COAL PORTERS' STRIKE. The coal strikers granted permits to the hospitals to cart coal, but refused the Salvation Army permission, on the ground that it intended to sell the coal.' STRIKERS COURT-MARTIALLEIX THE DYNAMITE CHARGES. JOHANNESBURG, January 26. Tho court-martial of Drake, Steyn, Ferquena, and Oliver, arrested under martial law, has opened. The first two are accused of causing an explosion, and the others of being in the possession of explosives. The penalty provided for this offence under martial law is death.
