IN SOUTHLAND.
It is not often that harvesting f-,!.-«----pace in the Bireradale distrctfo early as January, but passengers by t Waimca trains to-day were surprised to see harvesters at work on Mr P. lithers farm (says Saturday's "31ataura Ensign"). The crop of oata was eovn early in August, and is an exceedingly good one. Tho warm weather experienced during tho past fortnight had a ripening effect. This however, is an exceptional crop. Tho bulk of tho oat harvest will not be ready for the hinder for at least another three weeks. As a whole, tho crops throughout the W'aimea Plains district aro looking exceedingly well. The frequent rain showers during November and December assisted the growth of the cereal in the lighter gravel land there, with the result that the hot weather experienced just prior to New Year ancl subsequently has helped them to develop very quickly. The oat crop this season on tho Waimea Plains promises to be one of the best experienced for several years.
