TWELVE BEST ROSES.
SUGGESTIONS INVITED,
The Melbourne "Argus" is cotdncting a poll of its readors with a view to arriving at the opinion of amateur gardeners as to tho twelve best garden roses. A correspondent sende us a copy of tho letter written to the "Argus" by Mr John Tallent, president of the ." National Rase Society of Victoria, and ■ suggests that it would be interesting if readers of "Tho Press" would contribute their views on tho eubjoct, sa - that we might compare the results vift the Victorian poll. Wo shall be v«rr glad indeed to publish such selection mado on the lines suggested by Jfr . Tallent. "We reprint below the material portion of his letter: — ■. , "Many roses classed as exhibition rarioties would be failures for general , garden purposes. A 'rose,' in my opinion, should give a ' r result* with*out undue attention, co I would suggest that the following attributes be taken into consideration, viz.:—Erect and vigorous growth, freedom of bloom, colour, and when possible perfume, as with so many hybrid tea rose* in culljvation it is difficult to secure perfume such as La France combined with other desirable qualities. "Tlio poll would most likely require to be confined to twelve garden ties, and one would necessarily have to omit many favourites and roses of exceptional merit. . , "I consider tho following' twelve would give amateur gardenere ■ general ■ satisfaction: — Madam Abel Ch»t*n»y (pink). •■ General McArtlrar (red). Kixiscrin Augusta Victoria (cte»m), Rhea Reid (red). Frou Karl Drwchki (white). Madam Xreon Pain (pink). ■■ Sou da Maria Z»y«e (carmtnr). , Joseph Hill fpink). ~ . ! Mrs Harold Broelrfebsxifc - 1 , Lv<mi Koso (pink). ; .-i-•• t . '- ; w * Wbitn Maman Coohet (white). •' Gcorgce Schwartz (yellow). • ;- "Dark hybrid perpetual roses. sucV -.-.'. as Prince Camilla de Rohan, 1 havo to ,jjj omit, as, although beautiful and greatly ■.;"- admired, they only bloom, as a rule, for , ■ a short period, and a good garden roe* . " should bloom for the gre«-»t«r part of .. ', the year." - * '.
