OBITUARY.
ME. GEORGE JONES,
The death took place on Saturday night of Mr Goorgo Jones, an early colonist. Mr Jones was born in Mar* ket Harborough, Northamptonshire, and after having served an apprenticeship as a compositor, was attracted by glowing accounts of New Zealand, and ]eft the Old Land in 1863. Mr Jones experienced a full sharo of tho vicissitudes of the early colonist. Ho went first to the West Coast goldfields, and •after a sharo of both good and ill-lack, was eventually compelled to tramp with others across the ranges and rivers to , Canterbury. Vacancies in his own business being then few, Mr Jonee made his way to Southland, worked at his trade for some time, and then.again tried his fortune on the goldfields, this time at Otago. After » somewhat chequered experience there. he obtained a position at hie trade onthe Wanganni "Chronicle." While engaped there the Maori War of 1867. broke out, and Mr Jones took his plac« in the ranks of the volunteers, for which ho held the Maori War medal ana was in receipt of the veterans' pension. On receiving his discharge he returned , to Canterbury, where he secured * ■position on tho staff of the "Lyttclton i Times," with which he was connected for over forty years. He was one oftue early members of the Canterbury Chess Club, to which he devoted much of his leisure time. Ho was also an enthusiastic angler. Mr Jones was one of we founders of the- Canterbury Typographical Society on its re-organisation in 1888, and for the last fifteen years had been an honorary member. Tho funeral' will take place at the Linwood Cemetery to-day, tho cortege leaving deceased's late residence, No. 274, Barba* does street, at three o'clock.
