Chief and Mrs Mackintosh entertained a large'; number' of gueste at • ' the Scottish Society's rooms on Saturday evening in celebration of their silver • wedding. Past Chief MacLaren presided, nnd there were aleo preeant Chiefs Macpherson, Maodonald and Broun, most of the councillors, and many of the oldest members with their wives. The health of the host and hostess was drunk with "Highland honours," and congratulatory speeches were delivered expressing- beet wishes for a long and happy future. Piper Ronald Fraser provided bagpipe"* music both in eelection and for the foursome that was danced on the platform. The presents were very numerous and worthy of the occasion, and Chief Broun, in the name of many members of the Society, presented the "silvered" couple with, » handeome casket of cutlery. A laTge number of congratulatory telegrams were read, along with apologies for absence. At the thiTty-sixth annual meeting of yhe Christchurch Railway Employees' Sick Benefit Society, the President (Mr J. L. Vartha) occupied the chair* and a fair number of mcmbexß were present. The committee's annual report showed that 80 members had received eick and accident pay, the average weekly amount being JC6 14s 7Jd. The balance-sheet ehowed receipts £507 15s Id. expenditure £457 17s 3d, leaving a credit balance of £49 17s lid to be carried forward. During the year 39 members were admitted, 8 transferred, 11 resigned, leaving 251 members on the books at the close of the year. It was with regret that the Society had to record tho deaths of Mr P. Connelly, Mr F. W. Hobb3, Mr W. D. Smith, and Mr Everett, members of the Society. The elec-" tioTi of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr H. Chaplin; vioe~prosid«nt, Mr G. Mr Priest, emith shop, Mr Wright nnd Mr Colville, boiler shop, Mt Estall and Mr Hulbert, sen., moulding *hop, Mr Vartha and Mr Whiting, car shop. Mr Broome, paint chop, Mr Mitchell and Mr Rolfe, pocdV ehede, Mr McGcorge; sick visitors and collector?. Messrs Priest, Wrisht, Estal , ., Vartba, Broome. Mitchell, and McGeorge. Mr Vaxth* installed Mr Cbaplin bb president for tho enRuinc yoar. The President then prewinted Mr Vartha with a Pnst President's medallion. Mr Tartha thanked the members for the handfome medallion. A vote of thenks was passed to all retiring officers for their cervices during tho year.
