AT LYTTELTON.

A WEEK-END CLEARANCE. Thore were busy scones on the waterfront at Lyttelton on Saturday, the energies of agents and waterside workers being concentrated on finishing work at the numerous ships in order to get them away from port beforo the week-end. Eighteen ships were being worked, and the volume of cargo ■ handled was very large. The- turbine ferry steamer Wahine made a fast, passage- from Wellington. B«ring tho 12 to 4 a.m. watch on Saturday morning she steamed 20 - knots an hour, and for the whole pasmko she averaged 17 knots. The Wahmo arrived at Lyttelton at 7 o'clock on Saturday morning, in time to connect with the first express for Ihvercargill. The Wahine worked a large quantity of cargo during the day and was coaled by the Kowhai. Included in the cargo landed by the ' Wahino was a largo shipment of fruit ex tho Tahiti from San Francisco and the Islands. The Huddart-Parker steamer Victoria did good work, and cleared up the big accumulation of cargo for Wellington. The steamer loaded about 1500 tons for tlu- northern port. Having discharged several hundred tons ot cargo from Auckland, the Union Co.'s steamer Wanaka sailed shortly after midday for Duncdin and Bluff." She will load at southern ports lor Auckland. The small steamers Wakatu and - Cygnet loaded full cargoes on Saturday for Kaikoura. The Cygnet sailed on Saturday night for Kaikoura, and will go on to Wellington, where she will )oad cheese cases for Akaroa and the Bays. The Wakatu sailed last night for Kaikoura and Wellington, and will return south about Wednesday. The German steamer Sturmfels has- a fairly large quantity of agricultural and other machinery and some ironwork to • land at Lyttelton and will sail for Dunedin about noon to-day. Thence ■ she will proceed to Newcastle to load coal for Singapore. Tho Norwegian steamer Hercules from Bunbury left Wellington at 6.30 a.m. on Saturday, and arrived at Lyttelton yesterday morning. She has 800,000* feet of jarrah to land. The Titania will now land part cargo of sleepers at Lyttelton, nnd will leave this , week for Bluff to complete dis- . charge of her cargo, which is all fof the Railway Department. CARGO BY THE CORINTHIC. Tho Shaw, Savill and Albion liner -Corinthic sailed during Saturday afternoon for . Auckland, Gisborne, and Wellington, to complete load- • ing for London. Since . Monday last the Corinthic has dis- , charged 2000 tons of general cargo, and has chipped a large quantity of produce for London. Her loading at Lyttelfcon was as follows: —1259 bales of wool, 1493 boxes of butter; 2573 crates Ml cheese, 1275 carcases of mutton, 331 .casks of tallow, 200 sacks of cocksfoot, 32 bales of leather, 66 casks of pelts, . and 4 . packages of sundries. The Poh'exua has been. commissioned, and -will leave Wellington to-day with, general cargo for' Lyttelton, where_ she i£due to-morrow morning. The <*■•' poi is due here on the 16th inst. from southern- ports, and will load a full .- cargo of produce for Auckland direct. PAtEENA MAKES SMART TRIP. The ferry, steamer Pateena arrived at 9.15" a.m. yesterday morning after ' a smart passage of thirteen hours and five minutes. The vessel was not timed to arrive at Lyttelton' before ten o'clock; consequently hex unexpected appearance three-quarters of an hour earlier than usual found a very small crowd on the wharf to meet her, and it . was noi until some time later'that'the . ferry train was shunted .on to the wharf to convey the passengers to Christchurch. Tho Pateena brought down a' large amount of general cargo, . - which she will discharge to-day, and "fcail as usual for Wellington to-night upon tho arrival of the 5.25 train from Christchurch. ... A BUSY WEEK IN SIGHT. There is every indication that the Lyttelton waterfront will bo busier this week than last. With the recominissioning .of coastal cargo steamers, the '.-■• quantity of cargo and produce moving coastwise is rapidly increasing, and a number of the steamers will be discharging and loading at Lyttelton this ■week. Several oversea steamers are due this ■week. The Shaw, isavill and Albion liner Arawa, from London via way ports and Wellington, will arrive on AVednesday to land 2000 tons of gene- . ral cargo and to load butter, cheese, wool, and meat for London. The New - Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Turakina, from London via Dunedin, is due to-raorrow or on Wednesday to discharge 9T>O tons of cargo". The ■ Federal-Shire steamer Kaipara and the Shaw, Savill and Albion,liner Zealnndie, from Glasgow and Liverpool, are both due at Lyttelton about Sunday next.
