STATE CARRIAGE OF COAL.
(tbxss association telegrau.) WELLINGTON, December 6. : Speaking' in the House during tho consideration of the Estimates this morning; Mr Eli said tlmt concerning - - tho shortage* of coal, ho ventured the' opinion that if tho Go\'ernmeni would put on a State ship there would bo no difficulty in getting her loaded to relievo the shortage ip'Wellington.* The Hon. W. Fraser: We have 5000 tons of coal at Westport, and can't got it away. Mr Ell: No, not in privato ships; but pat it on a Stato ship and you mil have no difficulty. . Mr Nosworthy: Wβ will lave no more of that sort of thing. Hon. membors: Have you any authority for making that statement? • air Ell: I hare no authority; for eaying so, but that is my opinion. The State coal mine was opened up to reduce the prico of coal, and this is one of the occasions on which it should be used for the benefit ef the' people. (special to'"tub frkss.") HAWERA, December 6. Owing. mainly to tho fndustnal troubles, there is a Coal famine nt Hawera. It seems impossible to get supplies, and purchasers are limited to one bag at a time: Consumers heio use Teupijt coal, and as it seems impossible to got supplies for at least three months, the prospect is-almost hopeless. Coal supplies are also' limited at Wanganui. ' : '
