MR HICKEY AND AGREEMENTS.
WELLINGTON, December 6. Mr Hickcy, secretary of the Federation of Labour, states that ho has received a lengthy cublo from Mr Hughes in connexion with the allegation of the employers that the Federation does not accept agreements as binding. "The best reply," says Mr Hickey, "is the fact that sinvo its establishment the Federation has used its influence to bring about the settlement of disputes that have, arison, and in every instance it has been successful. Disputes at Blackball, Stockton, and AYarfcworth have been settled through tho instrumentality of tho Federation. Tho present strike oonld iusfc as easily bo settled if both sides met in a spirit cf sweet reasonableness. If it comes to a question of committing broaches of agreement, employers cannot show a clean sheet. Quibbling on this point, however, at tho present time will servo no good purpose. Wo havo lepeatedly given our assurance that on the ques- . tion of submitting tho wholo of the points of tho present dispute, wo would loyally abide by the decision of the .- Arbitrator. Wβ reiterate that assurance once- more."
