THE TRAGEDY ON A JAPANESE STEAMER.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, December 6. An inquest on the death of the Japanese sailor on the Kwanto Maru was opened and was adjourned till Monday. The boatswain, who is alleged to have fired the shots which caused the death, was present at the inquest and was subsequently returned to the ship. WELLINGTON, December 6. The Japanese Consul has instructed the captain to detain tho boatswain pending further advice from tho Japanese Government. If it is the wish of that Government he will immediately apply to the Governor for an extradition order. He points out that the treaty between Great Britain and Japan, provides for tho extradition of criminals, aud that the New Zealand police have no jurisdiction in tho matter.
