SUMNER BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION.

GARDEN COMPETITION

Several months ago the committee of the Suniner Beautifying Association announced that a garden competition would be held sometime, during the month of December, for the purpose of encouraging the residents of the borough to take an interest in gardening matters. As an inducement, the Association offered a first prize of £3 3s and a second of £2 2s. The date of the inspection was not made known until the judge, Mr Robert Nairn, inspected the gardens on Wednesday last. Mr Nairn has now forwarded his report to the committee. The possible number of points that could be obtained was 100, viz.:—Flowers 30, vegetables 15, ehrubs and fruit trees 15, general effect 40. There were nineteen entries, and the following are the point 3 gained by the first twelve: —Mr T. Whitfield 70, Mr Lawson 55, Mrs Isaac Wilson 47, Mr J. D. Watson 47, Mr S. K. Bassett 45, Mrs A. A. Mitchell (Redcliffs) 40, Miss Bain 31, Mr Unwin 28, Miss M. Thornley 24, Mr Snell 23, Mrs Babington 22, Mr C. Ferguson 18. The report states that as this is the first competition of the kind in Sumner, tho Association may be" congratulated upon the result. Some of the competitors displayed considerable knowledge in the cultivation of plants, and also much taste in arranging them. A suggestion is made for a. more equitable allotment of points in future competitions, as Mr Nairn points out that to give only fifteen pointe for fruit trees andshrubs, combined, is not a fair adjustment, are very important and distinctive branches of horticulana , th , e «a»e with other things. ?f^Tw h ° Wn in re «ard to the sowing In «5w was a* Bo noticeable. was a. lack of »»l.^ ata a™ low, there while others hadPt£"E!£ v^^ flowers. 1654 Replay «
