FARMERS' UNION CABLE MESSAGE TO SYDNEY.
(press association tklxckam.) WELLINGTON. December 5. . The following cable message has been sent to the Farmers' and Settlers' Association, Sydney, by Mr J. G.. Wilson, president of tho Dominion Executive of tho Farmers' Union: — "Kindly give publicity to the fact that New Zealand Union is strongly against making terms with Federation of Labour, as suggested by Hon. Hughes, and endorses reply cabled by Defence Committee to that gentleman. Federation for trivial reasons brought farmers to brink of ruin which was only averted by prompt union of farmers."
As the membership of the Wharf Labourers' Union is* now almost sufficient to work the port, it was decided at a meeting of the union- to-day that although the agreement between the employers and- workers provides for preference to unionists, priority of engagement will' be given. to those .members joining the union on or --*ore Monday, December BIH, who are of good character, and whoi in the opinion of the labour foreman, are capable of performing the work.
