AN ABORTIVE CONFERENCE.
The conference of parties convenedby the Industrial Commissionor' asked * the representatives of the * Waterside Workers' Union themselves to starts work on the Tofua and Karitane, in." order to give the men a lead, but they declined. The conference then adjourned indefinitely. The steamer Brisbane is still held up at Newcastle owing to tho refusal of tho crew to take the vessel to New Zealand.'
