At tho quarterly meeting of the Sel vryv Licensing Committee, held a? Rakaia yesterday.afternoon, Mr T. A. B- Bailey, S.M., presided. Jamcr Walter Halliday, licensee of tV Chertsey Hotel, made an application for a conditional license for the Boxing Day trottirg meeting' of the Ashburto.-, Trotting Club. The police reported that on the las' occasion when tho licenso was granted there were many signs of drunkenness, ard tho opinion was expressed that the licerso should not be granted. Sergeant Emerson, of Ashburto-". said that several inmates from the fuarangi Home had been under the influence of liquor on the la«t day of ihi races. In addition to this, the after effects of the liquor booth had heei bnd. and several who had not been drinking for months had made a fresh start. .Mr Langley, a member of the Committee, said he would like to see the booth given another trial, which was erdorsed by Mr McMillan, the only other member present, who said that it was for a different club. A conditional license was granted on the same conditions as on the previous occasion, and the hours fixed were from 12 noon to 5 o'clock. An application from Mr Halliday for a conditional license for the Methven Caledonian Sports was refused, the Committee not being favourable to granting conditional licenses for purely sports meetings. The aoßwj reports on all licensed nouses Iff the district were satisfactory.
