SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
The monthly meeting of the West Christchurch District High School Committoe was hold on Wednesday. Pre-v-ot—Messrs S.. McMurray <in the chair), E. Parlano. W. Sheldon, J. McCullough, W. B. Bultitude, and W. G. Sloan. It was decided to .hold the school picnio at the Racecourse on Saturday, the 20th inst. and a; sub-com-mittee, consisting of, Messrs Robson, Bultitude, and Sheldon, with the headmaster, was appointed to arrange details. A small sum was voted out of the No. 2 Account towards the purchaso of prizes in connexion with the picnic. Tt was agreed to fall in with the arrangement suggested by tho Board for the school to break-up on tho 23rd inst., and re-assemble on February 2nd. It was decided to recommend Samuel Rewi Cuming for appointment as pupilteacher. The Beautifying Association, through Messrs S. McMurray and J. Wyn Irwin, applied to the Committee for assistance towards erecting an open wire and iron fence on the Lincoln raid frontage of Hagley Park, in place of the present hawthorne fence. The Committee regretted that it could not devote funds to this object, though the proposal appealed strongly to them in the interests cf tho children, and strongly urged parents to support the project financially, as tho present hedge sheltered numbers of undesirable characters, whose conduct was a menace to the morals of tho children.
The monthly meeting of th& Hornby and Islington, School Committee was held on Wednesday. Present —Messrs Manhire (chairman), Weeks, Price, BankisS, Horman, Bigham, and Nind (secretary). The headmaster reported as follows:—Scholars on roll, boys 98, girls 96. total 194; average attendance, boys 87.4, girls 86.4, total 173.8. The Education Board reported that the examination of tha Standard VI. scholars would -take place on December 15th at the Riccarton School. It was decided to hold the annual school picnic on Saturday, December 13th, at Racecourse Hill. The Visiting Committee reported that the flow of water into the bath was very bad, and the secretary waa instructed to write to the Road Board regarding: the matter. Messrs Horman and Weeks wore appointed a Visiting Committee.
