Captain Hatfield arrived from Wellington by yesterday morning's ferry steamer. _ ; - • Tho Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C., returned to Wellington, by the "Wahine last night. It is announced that a call has been addressed to Rev. T. Tait, M.A., 8.D., of St. Paul's Presbyterian church, Christchurch, inviting him to take charge of Chalmers Church, Adelaide. Mt is expected that Dr. Aver„l.,will assurae the Episcopate of Auckland early in February*. The date on which he will be enthroned has not yet been '„_ed. ';.'; • Mr E. J. , A New Zealand-Canadian wedding of much interest .to New Zealanders took place in London recently, when Mrs Frank Perry; daughter ■of Mr G. P. Donnelly, of Crissoge, was married to Mr Peter Lamorte, of Canada.

At the close of a series of winter entertainments for juveniles, Miss Calvert, mistress of the Governor's Bay School, was presented by tno young Ecople of the district with a handsome andbag and silver-mounted purse, as a token of their appreciation of her efforts to provide them with suitablo evening recreation.

It was stated in th© Hawke s Bay "newspapers a day or two ago that Mr H. M. Campbell, M.P. for Hawke's Bay, would not stand for re-election, and that Mr Mason Chambers would bo the "Reform" candidate at the next election. This statement has since been denied by Mr Campbell, who says he will stand against all comers.

Pattison, manager of "The Octagon" Theatre at Dunedin, will come to the Colosseum, Mrs Millington, manager of His Majesty's Theatre, will go to -Ashburton, Mr Rowley, of the Sydenham Theatre will take charge of. His Majesty's, Mr A. Shephard, manager of _ the Globe Theatre, will go to the Lyceum, Timaru, Mr W. Frazer, manager Timarn, will go to Dunedin, and Mr George Martinengo, of Ashburton, will tak© control of the Globe.
