MEETINGS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The monthly meeting of the South Woimakariri River Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs N. X.* Bawdcn (chairman), H. B P-rynian. E. Smith, C. H. Opie, W. 15. Samuels, "WV P. Spencer, C. Burgess, and F. E. Jones. Tho ovea-ae-er reported that thero had been two small floods in the river eince-the last report, but no damage had been done to any of the woris, and -no change bad taken place in the course of the river. The river **-aa '-.till striking very hard on the concxeto at the big groyne between Xos. 7 and 8 embankmenta, and No. 8. had been repaired. Rabbit-poisoning had cost £2 Bs, and gorsc-grubbing £56 IDs. Accounts amounting to £021' lSe 6d were passed for payment. A ham and goose tournament was held on Tuesday in donnczion with the Papanui Social Clnb, amongst the members' lady friends only. Mrs Clark won first prize (a ham), Mrs C. Smith second prize (a gooec), and Mra J. R. ITcCalk-ugh third prize (a bottle of wine).. Mrs A. Palmer presided over an attendance of thirty ladies. A challenge euchre mutch bcUveen the Papanui Social Club and the Christchurch Working M-en's C!ub was played on Tuesday at the Papanui Social Club'a hall, Papanui winning by 46 games to 38. Re-reahments were afterwards •ervod, and musical items given by various members oi both clubs. An impromptu elocutionary dramatic recital wm given by the Itev. Archibald Hunt at the West End Hall last evening. Mr Hunt recited M-.1. B. Spurr's comical "Jack ar.d Jill. "Tho Quarrel" (Mack-iy). "A Pin" (Ella Wheeler Wilcox), and iVst.ff's speech on Honour. H» sjso gave the following monologues: —' -- Fallen. Star," "i'he Green Eve c-f the Ye'low God," "A Bunch of Ro&as." "The Old Clown," and - \A Dickens Reverie," the latter consisting .of the pourtrayal of ft number of well-known Dickens characters. Other recitations were given by Miss Lucy Cowan and Miss Muriel Brewins.
