John Fleming, a second offender for drunkenness, was fined iOs, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. « A young man for a first offence, was convicted and discharged. ASSAULT. . Frederick George Sheargold, a wellbuilt young man, was cnarged with striking Henry Holmes in the face, with his fist. He pleaded "not guilty," but subsequently amended his plea to "guilty," irhen Holmes showed a cut eye, and a constable and Senior-Sergeant Mathieson testified to his telling them that he had struck the blow. Accused was fined 20s, in default 48 hours' imprisonmei-t. IDLE AND DISORDERLY. Laura Chaffey appeared on remand charged with being a rogue and a vagabond in that ehe had insufficient means of support. She had elected to go before a jury, and Senior-Sergeant Mathieson asked that the charge should be reduced to one of "idle and disorderly" to allow of tho accused being dealt with summarily. She pleaded .not guilty to the amended charge.Tho evidence of the police was that the accused had done no work, and had been wandering about the streets, and loitering on the river Danks. She was on the railway station, under the influence of liquor, when arrested. The accused: I went to the station to see my brother, who is a traveller for Sargocd, Son, and Ewen. Sergeant Jackson: On one occasion sho went to tho Crown Hotel to see her brother, and he turned out to be mc. (Laughter). Senior-Sergeant Matlneeon said none of tho Homes would take the accused. The accused: I don't want to go there;"l want to go home to my own people. The accused, who had seventeen previous convictions, was sentenced to one month's hard labour.
