CATHEDRAL SQUARE INCIDENT.
Robert Shanks (Mr Donnelly), taxicab driver, not guilty to a charge of using insulting language within Cathedral square towards another taxi-cab driver, with intent to provoke a breach of the peace. The language, alleged to have been used, included the word, "scab." - Thomas Henry Minge, complainant, said with others on the cab-stand he had been discussing strike matters. Defendant used the language .complained of towards him.
Samuel Halligan, taxi-cab driver, also gave evidence. Complainant said be would smash Shanks's face, in, and also called him a "pimp." Both these remarks were qualified by oaths. , After hearing Mr Donnelly, accused was convicted and fined £3.
Mr Donnelly then made application that no costs should be allowed a special constable who had so abused his position. » Costs were, however, allowed both witnesses.
