COAL SUPPLIES.
NO CAUSE FOR ALARM. The action of the New South Wales wharf labourers in deciding to boycott cargo to and from New Zealand is.not disturbing the peace of mind of local coal merchants. They state that ample supplies of coal can be obtained from other countries, and the only persons who will lose over it will be the miners and the working classes. Owing to the extra freight chargeable on coal coming from countries further afield than Australia, there must be a rise in the prioe of coal, which "it is pointed out will fall far more heavily upon the shoulders of the working class than the well-to-do. CHRISTMAS FRUIT HELD UP.. It was learned from one of the leading grocers that quantities of new season's fruit for the Christmas trade are st present in Melbourne, and, 'from ! -resent indications, there is little like- - ihooa of it reaching the Dominion in . time for Cbristmastide. Seeded raisins and prunes have come to hand from California, and'there is no difficulty'-in getting supplies of .these fruits. -Muscatel*, Jordan almonds, dates, figs, sultanas, and various.ether fruits—tho new season's croba—coma
direct from Smyrna to Melbourne, and have reached that port, and are likely to remain there until the Christmas demand is over and past. Muscatels for instance, are purely a Christmas line, for which there is very little demand after the "festive season." In the meantime grocers are endeavouring to get the best stocks available of last season's fruits.
