POPULATION NEARL J 2,000,000. (By Cable.—Press Association—Copyxieht.) SYDNEY, December 3. . The population of New South Wales at- the end?,-of -September -,-. was esti- : mated at 1,823,424.
The population at the 1911 census was T,t>-8,74_, of, which 636,353 were in Sydney and suburbs.- There is a "Million Club" in Sydney which works actively towards reaching a round million for that city. In 1911 Newcastle had 55,000 people, Broken .Hill 30,972, Parramatta (only twenty miles from Sydney and really part of it) 12,465, and Granville (to which the same remark applies) 7231. Besides these axe Mainland 11,313, Goulbum 10,123, and Bathurat, Albury, . Lithgow, Grafton,. Orange, Wagga Wagga, and.- Tainwortb, ... count another 50,000 .Between them, so . that the proportion of rural dwellers to the chief and other town dwellers, ia a matter of constant concern to thoughtful Australians.
