ALLEGED CUSTOMS FRAUDS.
CUSTOMS CLERK AND AGENTS CHARGED WITH THEFT. LARGE SUM INVOLVED. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Messrs W. Barrett and Henry Andrews, J.P.s, Htfgh Lawton Owen (Customs agent), Samuel James McCormack (Customs agent), and James Anderson Campbell (clerk in the Customs office), appeared charged, on the information of William James Wratt, Collector of Customs at Christchurch, with theft. There were five charges in all, tho thefts being alleged to have been made during the last four or five months. The amount involved was £198 Bs. McCormack and Campbell were jointly charged on one information of theft, and Owen and Campbell on the other eight informations. Georgo' Davies. Ltd., and the Crown Clothing Company were the firms from whom the thefts were alleged to have been made.' ' '
Mr Stringer, X.C.. who prosecuted, said tho cases at present were theft, but possibly a case of conspiracy might be laid.
Mr M. Donnelly appeared for the accused McCormack and Owen, and Mr Hoban for the* accused Campbell. Mr Stringer asked for a remand until Tuesday next, which was granted. Bai! was allowed, each of the accused in £250. and two sureties ecch of £250. or one of £500.
M-Cormack got bail immediately and was liberated.
