Twonty-tix of those detained -it Zabern for being concerned in the disturbance outside the barracks, were next morning marched, guarded by soldiers with fixed bayonets, to the civil tribunal, which discharged them. The municipality passed a resolution protesting against Colonel yon Renter's open contempt of the law, and provocative proceedings. The resolution was forwarded to the Chancellor. Herr yon Bothmann-Hollwcp, members of the Ministry, and the President of the Reichstag. While Herr yon Bethmann-llollweg, in reply, promised a strict investigation, with redress if tho law had .been broken, tho Minister of War stated that all necessary instructions had been forwarded to the responsible military authorities at Strasburg. The latest reports state that the Government havo sent a commissioner from Strasburg to investigate tho matter. Tho police at Zabern havo been reinforced to prevent tho further possibility of military actien in tho event of disturbances.
Tho Press nrd all parties in AlsaceLorraine are unanimous against tho action of the military authorities, but the latter are anxious to maintain their ground, lest the Imperial authority in tho province should suffer. Three thousand Socialists at Muelhnusen, including two members of the Reichstag, passed a resolution, protesting against the conduct of the military at Zabern, and threatening a general strike if the military dictatorship of Alsace was not terminated ehortly. Tho newspapers of France and Germany treat tho Zabern incidents as in nowise a question of nationalities, but simply as between the military authorities and civilians. German and English newspapers eulogise the praiseworthy roticenco of tho responsible French organs.
