PEACE IN THE CITY.

For tho first timo for somo weeks ~ a largo number of members of the old , Waterside Workers' Union congregated ' at tho head pf tho Queen's wharf this .-';* morning, asking for work on the yes- - ; eels in port. Their names were taken....' by tho secretary. . The total number of traterside workers who have broken away from tho strikers is now over 100. There ;. ware I_QO members in the old union, but ii/-r> v.H?ro not all regular workers .- on the waterfront. The return of so many men is regarded as significant. Many are of the opinion that it is the beginning of a stampede. The Atua, manned by a "scratch" - crew, sailed for tho Islands and Sydney- -■'''. The streets and public places of the city having to-day resucied their ordinary peacefulness, save for tho perfectly legitimate Exhibition bustle, and the police having reported accordingly, it was decided by the city magistrates to further suspend tho order of closure made last Monday, and to allow tho. hotels to remain" ooen to-night from uix o'clock to ton o'clock, and again tomorrow from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. At the hour tho original order expires. The Pukaki arrived from Gisborne at 8.45 a.m. She was 62 hours over her usual 30 hours' trip,, and sho encountered heavy weather.
