HONE HEKE'S WAR.
The last stand of the Maoris in Hone Heke's war of 1845, the first war in tho north of New Zealand, was mado at Ruapekapeka, which is in the Bay of Islands, 16 miles inland. Enquiries havo recently been mado os behalf of tho Scenery Preservation Board with a view to securing this historic spot, and a suggestion has .been made that a memorial should be erected to commemorate the engagement and the British soldiers who fell there. A_roport has been prepared by Mr li. Boscawen for the information of th. Board. The original intention was that tho land comprising and surrounding the pa should be reserved, and ho ascertained that the Native owners were willing to make a free gift of about _o acres. Thirteen British eoluiers fell in the engagement, and were bnried in one grave, the position of which cannot now be identified, so that tho sugbested obelisk cannot bo erected at tho actual spot. Tho old pas are well preserved the original ear_iwor.es being still almost intact. Mr Boscavcn remarked that his observation*; led. him to the conclusion that the Maoris bad some oakeha adviser in the construction of the'pa, for tho fortifications were certainly of European design.
