THE "SPECIALS."
ASHBURTON FARMERS' APPRECIATION.
Strike matters occupied the attention of the monthly meeting of the Ashburton branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, which was held on Saturday afternoon, Mr R. Gilmour presiding. Mr G. W. Leadley referred to the great self-sacrifice which had been made and the ready help which had been given by those who had gone to Christchurch and Lyttelton in connection with the great industrial crisis the country was now passing through, and expressed the opinion that the meeting should pass a resolution expressing apEreciation of the services, which had een rendered. He moved: "That this meeting desires to express its highest appreciation of the prompt and valuable assistance so willingly given by those who, as special constables, and as workers, went to Christchurch and Lyttelton to assist in loa_lng and unloading produce during the industrial trial crisis." The motion was scoonded by Mr C. Reid. In doing so ho specially mentioned the ready way in which Mr John Grigg had acted, and to the fact that Mr Grigg had stated that he would not ask anyone else to do what he was not prepared to do himself. It showed the metal Mr Grigg was made of, and he and those who had acted with him wero deserving of their thanks for volunteering to go down and to assist in seeing that the farmers' produce was got away. It was something awful to think of the position the country might be put in, and the meeting should do all it could to express its appreciation of the ready help which had been given. Mr F. Frampton and the chairman each spoke in support of the motion, which.was carried unanimously.
